I then started creating pre & post tests and other quizzes on there to get baselines for the kids. Creating them is super easy as you can choose Multiple Choice or True/False format. You create the questions and provide the possible answer choices. So far I have created quizzes for Vocabulary, Story Comprehension, Irregular Verbs/Plurals, Articulation Placement, etc. Once you create the quiz you can choose a due date and assign it to any group(s) you want. You can also have the grades automatically added to your Edmodo grade book after the kids take it!
It's a really neat idea because my kids actually beg to take quizzes on Edmodo!!
In addition to completing quizzes, the kids can also write on the group wall or my wall. Sometimes we have 5 or 10 minutes left of a session so they log onto Edmodo and answer my prompt which may be "Tell me 2 things you learned today" or "What was your favorite thing you learned this week?" This is good feedback for me as I can reflect on my lessons and figure out what things went well and what things I need to change or spend more time on. As an extra step with answering question prompts, I always stress the need for basic writing mechanics (capital letters, periods, etc.).
Is anyone else using Edmodo in their SL classroom? What do you use it for?
I just learned about Edmodo in my new teacher technology orientation! I was hesitant at first, because I wasn't quite sure how I could use. I was referred to your blog :) I was curious though, in your therapy room, do you have computers that the kids can access their accounts? Or do you ever do homework or something on Edmodo?
ReplyDeleteLast year I received 4 netbooks from my district so those are what the students use to access their accounts in my room. It's so hard to get into the computer labs at the times we need to so the netbooks have been a huge help!
DeleteI don't give homework but I do have them do lots of quizzes and pre/post tests on Edmodo. I always give them time during their session to complete them though. Not all my students have internet access at home so I can't really assign stuff to do at home.
A third grade teacher in my school also uses Edmodo with her class and she gives them little assignments or quizzes to do on there. I think she gives them time to do this during their computer lab time.
Basically before every activity I plan, I try and think if I could make it more engaging by doing some part of it online. At the end of last year the kids created their own stories with an online program called Kerpoof and they loved it! If it were just a regular paper and pencil activity, they may not have enjoyed it so much.
